Getting started

What is WhatDish?

WhatDish turns a photo into something you can cook. Snap a dish, at a restaurant, at a friend's table or on your screen, and get a full recipe with ingredients, amounts and steps. Or snap your fridge and see what you can make tonight with what's already there.

How do I get the best results from a photo?

Good light makes the biggest difference. Get the whole plate in frame, shoot from slightly above, and get close enough that the food fills most of the picture. For the fridge, open the door wide and make sure the shelves you care about are visible.

What does "Snap your fridge" do?

Take one photo of your shelves. WhatDish picks out the ingredients it can see and suggests recipes that use them, so you can cook tonight without another trip to the store.

Your recipes

How accurate is it?

Surprisingly good, and most people are impressed by how close it gets. Keep in mind that WhatDish works from a single photo, so it has to make some educated guesses: hidden ingredients like butter, stock or a splash of cream, exact quantities, and how long something was cooked. Treat the recipe as a great starting point, and taste and adjust as you go.

A recipe doesn't look right. What can I do?

Try another photo with better light or a different angle, which often helps. If something still looks off, email us with the dish and what went wrong. Those reports help us improve, and if a snap failed because of a problem on our side it won't count against your Snaps.

Can I trust it for allergies or nutrition?

Please don't rely on it for that. WhatDish can't see every ingredient in a dish, so always check the ingredient list yourself and use your own judgment on allergens, dietary needs, and food safety.

How do cookbooks work?

Save any recipe you like to a cookbook and organize them your way, like "Everyday" or "Sunday dinners".

Snaps and subscriptions

What is a Snap?

A Snap is one recipe created from one or more photos. New users get some Free Snaps to try WhatDish, and you can earn more when a friend you invite signs up. A subscription gives you more Snaps each month. The current offers are always shown in the app.

How do I cancel or manage my subscription?

Subscriptions are handled by your app store. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile, then Payments & subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

How do I get a refund?

Please email us. We'd like to hear what went wrong, and it's often something we can fix.

Apple handles all App Store refunds, so on iPhone you'll need to request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. On Android, you can request one through Google Play within 48 hours of purchase, so don't wait on us for that. After 48 hours, email us and we'll sort it out. Cancelling a subscription stops future payments but doesn't by itself refund the current period.

Account and privacy

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account from your profile in the app, or email us from the address on your account, and we'll take care of it. Deleting your account removes your profile and the recipes saved to it, though anything you already shared stays with the people you shared it with. If you have a subscription, cancel it through your app store as well.

What happens to my photos?

We use your photos to create your recipes and for the cover image on your recipe. We don't sell or share your personal data. Our Privacy Policy explains what we keep, why, and how to ask us to delete it.

How do I report a problem or inappropriate content?

Email us with as much detail as you can, such as a screenshot or the recipe link. Our Community Standards explain what isn't allowed on WhatDish.
